Consolidated Celebrates The Holidays With GNYFCA

On Thursday, December 5, our company attended the Greater New York Floorcoverers Association Annual Holiday Luncheon. It was a great day spent with friends in the local flooring market, celebrating the holiday season and discussing trends in the industry.

A highlight of the day was a moving send-off to the Executive Director for GNYFCA, Jim Dipelesi, as he is set to retire at the close of 2013. With over 72 years of experience in the flooring industry and more than 25 involved with GNYFCA, Dipelesi has built a reputation for being a leader, mentor, and trailblazer for the organization and its members. We thank Jim for his service to the industry and his incredible friendship and wish him the best of luck in the next chapter of his life!

Happy Holidays to the entire GNYFCA Family!

‘Tis The Season To Sparkle

Gorgeous Sputnik Chandeliers welcome guests at the entrance to Kate Spade New York 789 Madison

On Monday, November 11, we attended a chic night of “sips, snacks & shopping” at Kate Spade New York, co-hosted by The Retail Design Institute’s New York Chapter. Held at Kate Spade’s Uptown Flagship Store, over 70 guests shopped the latest styles from the iconic brand, while taking in the beautiful aesthetics of the store that opened in May 2013.

A highlight of the evening included a discussion with Philip Rosenzweig, VP of Store Design for Kate Spade New York, about the brand’s retail design, in-store experience, and interior finishes. When designing the Flagship Store, “the team tried to envision what Kate Spade’s Uptown Brownstone would look like,” said Rosenzweig. Fielding questions from an eager crowd, Rosenzweig also spoke of the skilled team behind the brand that collects, creates, and curates the interior furniture and finishes in an eclectic, yet cohesive fashion. Taking note of the focal pieces of the entrance to the store – the large sputnik chandeliers – he also explained that the organization typically searches for lamps like that but when it comes to ones in that size and scale, the company custom creates them.

Girly and fresh – the store evokes simplicity with the kind of glamour that only Kate Spade can provide. The “bow” finish was found throughout the 4-story retail location – inlayed into the floor, within the wood screen throughout the first floor and second floor balcony, stitched on pillows on the home furnishings floor, and even in the restroom. It is this attention-to-detail in design that embraces the theme, without overwhelming.

Our evening’s events definitely made us pause at the end of the night, as we were handed canvas totes printed with Spade’s tagline: “Uptown is the new Downtown”. We think Kate is onto something…

In April 2013, Campari America hosted their first ever American Honey Bar-sity Athletics Social Sports Program celebrity kickball game. Taking place in Times Square, we installed an American Honey branded turf where celebrities like Ryan Lochte and Donovan McNabb played an exciting game of childhood favorite sport, kickball.  Proceeds from the charity event went to the Boston Red Cross to help the victims of the Boston bombing tragedy. Below are some photos from the event and from our social media platforms.

Site Feature: Unique Turf Installation Part 2

Just five months after our Fiesta In The Square Installation, we took to Times Square again for another unique turf install. In April 2012, we installed a leveling subfloor and turf for the first ever “Broadway Bowl” hosted by Nike and the NFL.  The event helped to kick off the 2012 NFL Draft, featuring autograph signings and a game played by current and retired NFL players, celebrities, and members of the FDNY and NYPD. Some of the famous players included Mark Sanchez, Justin Tuck, Matt Ryan, Dwayne Bowe, Browning Nagle, Ronnie Lott, Jadakiss, Pooch Hall and Ace Hood. Below are some photos from the installation of the field.

Consolidated Participates In CoreNet/IIDA Tour

Barclays (1)

Fresh off the long Labor Day weekend, Consolidated participated in an Architectural Tour of the famed Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The event, hosted by IIDA New York and CoreNet Global New York, was sponsored by office furniture manufacturer Allsteel.

With nearly 70 participants in attendance, the group embarked on a behind-the-scenes tour around the entire facility. Our tour began in the main concourse, a space that features unique architectural designs such as high ceilings, wood finishes and “Barclays blue” branding throughout. We passed arena food vendors such as Juniors, Calexico, and Brooklyn Burger – each built strategically throughout the main level to promote cohesive movement through the space (and delicious local Brooklyn cuisine!). From the entrance of the main concourse, where 80% of visitors to the arena enter, we were treated with sweeping views of the arena. Parallel to the main entrance is the Nets Practice Court – visible from various angles both inside and outside of the arena.

Our next stop was a level up to the Barclays Suite Level, where we stood upon the Vorwerk custom crystal carpet our team installed throughout the arena. The crystals in various gray color ways lead visitors throughout the Suite Level into the BlackberryNow Lounge, where all access ticketholders can enjoy the Stoli Bar and cellular charging stations furnished by Blackberry. One of the most unique architectural features of the Suite Level is The 40/40 Club – a modern, high-end sports club known for its link to media and sports mogul Jay-Z. The herringbone wood floor welcomes you through an open walkway placed above the main entrance of the arena. From this atrium, you are brought into the sleek main area of the club where metal-chain curtains, tile, and wood finishes bring together the décor.

The tour ended at the Event Level of the arena, with a view of the Calvin Klein Courtside Club and the most exclusive area of the facility: The Vault. The CK Club features Vorwerk’s custom crystal carpet installed by Consolidated. A special feature of this club is its glass walls – which are the perfect front row seat to the Nets Practice Court. The Vault features 11 suites with private entrances, and is decorated with metal finishes, centered around the Armand de Brignac Champagne Bar. We had a great time touring the arena and seeing our installations in the overall incredible design at the Barclays Center. Be sure to check it out yourself!

(l to r) David Meberg of Consolidated Carpet, Father Francis Gasparik of St. Francis Food Pantries & Shelters, and Jim Phillips of TPG Architecture

On a sunny Monday in Larchmont, New York, Consolidated Carpet’s CEO David T. Meberg proudly received recognition for his unwavering support of St. Francis Food Pantries and Shelters at the charity’s Annual Golf for Hunger Event. The 15th Annual Golf Outing & Pool Party Fundraiser on July 29, 2013 was hosted by  Jim Phillips of TPG Architecture. The event was well-attended by many in the construction, design and real estate industries. With the backing of these numerous supporters, the event raised over $350,000 for St. Francis Food Pantries & Shelters.

David and our organization have been supporters of St. Francis Food Pantries & Shelters for a number of years, frequently coordinating and participating in fundraising events for the local non-profit.

“St. Francis Food Pantries provides essential services for those less fortunate than us throughout the N.Y. Metro Area,” said David. “I am privileged and humbled to be honored by such an important organization.”

St. Francis Food Pantries & Shelters serves the poor in local communities by providing shelter, food, clothing and counseling to support the emotional and physical needs of the less fortunate. The organization serves over 1.2 million meals each year throughout  22 non-profit Food Pantries, Soup Kitchens, Safe Havens, Drop In Centers and Shelters supported by St. Francis Food Pantries & Shelters throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Long Island, Westchester and New Jersey.

We are proud to continue our support for such a worthy cause and urge you to learn more about St. Francis Food Pantries & Shelters by visiting their website at

Consolidated, Charities & The Community

Recently, Consolidated had the opportunity to support and participate in two amazing charity fundraising events. As a company deeply involved in our community and giving back to those in need, we were happy to be a sponsor at both the “A Taste of Down Under” – A Food & Wine Tasting to Benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association and IMPACT|NY’s Summer Soiree.

On June 24, we took to the Tribeca Rooftop to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association at an Australian-themed fundraiser. With an authentic musician from “down under”, guests were treated to a great show with horns, shakers and noise makers. The event featured food from local hotspots The Australian, American Flatbread, The Thirsty Koala, Waltzing Matilda’s Bakery and more – paired with wines from Old Bridge Cellars, De Bortoli Wines, and Sileni Estates (to name a few!). It was an uplifting event to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of this event which enhances the MDA’s support of 10 local healthcare facilities.

Two days later, our team attended the IMPACT|NY event hosted by IIDA NY and designNYC at the Prince George Ballroom. IMPACT|NY was founded to increase the visibility and stress the importance of pro bono design work in the New York City area. Applicants were encouraged to submit designs that will make difference in an outpatient facility in Harlem. We were honored to be one of the event’s event sponsors and look forward to seeing the final outcome of the facility once the project is completed!

Lunching & Learning at NYP/CUMC

At Consolidated Carpet, we pride ourselves on not only being superior installers and contractors, but as a resource for people to learn more about flooring products and applications. We like to share our knowledge base with people who can use these facts to make informed decisions on what products should be installed throughout their spaces. An industry that has very specific requirements when specifying and installing flooring is healthcare. Because of the various needs of healthcare facilities, from anti-microbial and slip-resistant products to air quality awareness, there are lines of products that most appropriately fit into the space. We work to ensure that healthcare facilities decision-makers are aware of the many problems that exist in their spaces, and how we can offer solutions tailored to their needs.

With these goals in mind, our healthcare team and two college interns visited the team at New York Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center (NYP/CUMC) to discuss some of the latest innovations in healthcare flooring. Partnering with a local distributor, we helped to present about PVC-free flooring – a product attribute that is becoming more popular in institutional projects for environmental and health benefits. After the presentation, we spoke with the team at NYP/CUMC about our healthcare division and previous project successes.

We received feedback that the group not only learned a lot about PVC-free flooring options, but installation methods that could best suit the facilities’ needs. Thanks to the team at NYP/CUMC for lunching & learning with Consolidated!

Consolidated at NeoCon

At the tail end of each spring, the commercial interiors industry comes together for a celebration of new products, innovations & best practices at the must-attend showcase of the year: NeoCon. Held at Chicago’s famous Merchandise Mart, the 3-day exhibit brings the “who’s who” of interiors to view and interact with vendors ranging from textiles to furniture, with our favorite being the flooring! Networking and trend-spotting take a front row seat to see what the next year will bring for the industry.

From June 10 – June 12, NeoCon shined, and we were excited to be in attendance. Our Executive VP spent time viewing the newest products in the floor covering industry, learning more about sustainable qualities, durability, and specific applications for install. One of the major flooring stand-outs for us was J+J Flooring Groups‘ new product line, Kinetex. Kinetex is a hard surface alternative, with high-performance in healthcare, educational and other institutional spaces. The wear-layer is created from “abrasion and ravel resistant knitted fabric”, while the Polyester backing offers a bit of cushion. With some interesting colorways, our team knows the Kinetex product will be a perfect solution for us to offer through our Healthcare Division.

Another group of products we found to be interesting and unique came from Shaw Contract Group. Their debut of “Hexagon” was stunning – carpet tiles in an uncommon shape with 6 sides instead of the usual 4. In addition, we enjoyed Shaw Hard Surface’s new “Chordinates” product, and look forward to working with both of these products!

Not to be outdone – many of of our other favorite debuts came from Milliken, Mannington, Tandus & Tarkett Johnsonite. Don’t miss the photos below of these stellar products. Can’t wait for NeoCon 2014!
